Oh thank you so much. I try and make my recipe easy to adapt. I try and limit how much butter I use and I try and not fry anything. Again enjoy 🙂

This looks so amazing! I always want to make these but shy away from them because we don’t use eggs in the house – what would be a good substitute for the egg in this recipe? By the way, this is an AWESOME site (echoing the above poster’s sentiments) SO glad I found you on Pinterest! 🙂

    • Budget Savvy Diva

You do not need to use eggs — it still will be yummy 🙂

I came across your pinterest site and then ended up here. So glad! As a FT student and working single mom I am always looking for easy and healthy homemade foods. I tend to devote one weekend a month to cooking a ton of foods and freezing them for usage during the month. I made these and not only did they freeze well but were so delicious! I can’t wait to see what other ideas you have in store!!!

Glad to have you here 🙂

I am going to try this with my Family, and use some Tastefully Simple Spinach and Herb dip mix, and Garlic Garlic, and I know it will be wonderful! I think I will use the Mama Mia Marinara sauce mix too! Can’t wait to try this!

I made this recipe last night for a dinner with friends. It was super easy to make & was delicious. Your photos were helpful in figuring out how to get the 25 shells in the pan 🙂 We decided that adding some warmed sauce prior to serving along with some fresh Parmesan would be good. We thought it needed the extra sauce to balance out the flavors. I served it with garlic bread & salad.

Everyone agreed this recipe is a keeper!

  • Amy

I made this tonight. It was so easy I used my home made sause and added hot italian sausage to the bottom. My kids loved it!

When you say pasta sauce what do you recommend!?

    • Budget Savvy Diva

Any will work — I go for a tomato and basil

  • Mabel

If I added ground turkey, should I do it to the sauce underneath or mix it in the filling? Would I cook it up before stuffing them? Thanks so much!

  • Teresa Henninger

Looks yummy but I don’t see how 25 stuffed shells will fit in an 8×8 pan. Did you stuff all 25 shells?

FAQs

What temperature do you bake stuffed shells? ›

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spoon the cheese mixture into each pasta shell and place open side up, in a single layer, in prepared pan. Pour the rest of sauce over the stuffed shells. Loosely cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Why are my stuffed shells watery? ›

Avoid anything with a gum listed—these gums bind water but release it as you heat the ricotta up. Straight out of its container, even good-quality ricotta can be too wet, which will result in a watery filling later.

What goes good with stuffed shells? ›

I often serve these stuffed shells with my Homemade Caesar Salad, but my Arugula Salad, Beet Salad, or Simple Green Salad would also pair well with this recipe. And when it comes to bread, you really can't go wrong! Stick with a crusty loaf, or make rosemary focaccia, garlic knots, or dinner rolls. Enjoy!

What's the difference between stuffed shells and stuffed manicotti? ›

You can accomplish this popular feat of Italian-American origin by following recipes for either manicotti or stuffed shells. Both pastas are meant to be stuffed. The difference is in the details. Literally translated, manicotti means “l*ttle muffs.” The large tubes are made for stuffing.

How long to cook small shells? ›

Why do you add an egg to ricotta cheese? ›

For extra creamy ricotta, add in an extra egg, a handful of grated parmesan, and a quarter cup of shredded mozzarella. Eggs help prevent the ricotta from drying out and serve to bind the ricotta so it doesn't become runny.

How do you thicken ricotta filling? ›

There are several methods. Strain the ricotta through a cheese cloth and squeeze out excess moisture before making the filling. Add almond flour. Add dry milk powder.

Do you drain ricotta cheese? ›

Remarkably simple to make, the versatile ricotta cheese is drained soon after cooking to form anything from a wet mush to firm, crumbly curds. Whether you are making your own ricotta, or drying out store-bought ricotta that is too wet for your taste, the draining process is the same.

Why are my stuffed shells hard? ›

The shells should be 1 minute shy of al dente– meaning they should still be a little firm/ have a “bite” because they will continue to cook in the oven. Also, if the shells are cooked al dente or over cooked, they will be flimsy and hard to stuff and can easily break when stuffing.

How many days are stuffed shells good for? ›

Like most leftovers, your stuffed shells should last for three to four days in a fridge set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower . If you can't eat the extra stuffed shells so soon, put them in the freezer set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit and they will stay fresh for four months.

What is the easiest way to fill manicotti shells? ›

(I find it easier to use pastry bags filled with the meat mixture to stuff the shells or you can cut the end of a sandwich baggie and stuff them that way. Less messy and much faster.).

What can I use instead of manicotti shells? ›

Lasagna pasta sheets are the way to go for manicotti. They're easier to use than traditional tubes, are less likely to tear, and they have a better texture — just make sure to get the kind without curly edges. To boil the lasagna sheets, crisscross them in the water so they aren't as likely to fuse together.
