Deborah Joy Winans was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 6, 1983, to Carvin Winans and Deborah Kerr Winans. Her three brothers are Carvin Jr., Ian, and Juan. Her grandparents, David & Dolores Winans, were the first members of her family to pursue a career in gospel music.
Deborah, in contrast to the family heritage, preferred acting to music. She earned a ‘BFA’ from Wayne State University, in Michigan. She furthered her education at the Moscow Art Theatre School, in Moscow. Later, she earned an ‘MFA’ at the California Institute of Arts.
Deborah made her acting debut in 2014 with the short film Fighting the Battle. Amber Torres directed the film. She made her stage debut as her aunt, Priscilla “CeCe” Winans, in the musical Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story. She co-starred in this play with her brother Juan, who played BeBe Winans.
