Forever chemicals have posed a persistent threat to ecosystems and human health due to their non-biodegradable nature and widespread use in various industrial and consumer products. Scientific studies have linked PFAS exposure to reproductive effects such as decreased fertility or increased high blood pressure in pregnant women; developmental effects or delays in children, including low birth weight, accelerated puberty, bone variations, or behavioral changes; increased risk of prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers; reduced ability of the body’s immune system to fight infections, including reduced vaccine response; interference with the body’s natural hormones; and increased cholesterol levels and/or risk of obesity.
In contrast, CleanCore’s aqueous ozone is compliant with the EPA Organic Program as a natural and effective cleaner and sanitizer. Thirteen states including CA, CO, CT, HI, IL, ME, MD, MN, NH, NJ, NY, VT, and WA have banned the sale of firefighting foam containing PFAS. 32 unique retail chains have committed to eliminating or reducing PFAS in food packaging, textiles and/or other products.
EPA is setting enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels at 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, individually. This standard will reduce exposure from these PFAS in our drinking water to the lowest levels that are feasible for effective implementation.
PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they linger in the environment for hundreds of thousands of years. Due to the widespread use of PFAS, forever chemicals have now been found in water supplies, food, soil and more, making their presence ubiquitous throughout the environment.
In April 2024, EPA issued the first-ever national, legally enforceable drinking water standard to protect communities from exposure to harmful PFAS. The final rule will reduce PFAS exposure for approximately 100 million people, prevent thousands of deaths, and reduce tens of thousands of serious illnesses.
Even though PFAS are lurking in the drinking water of most states, some have incredibly high levels of these harmful chemicals in their water supplies. The state with the highest PFAS concentrations in drinking water is, by far, Michigan.
Currently, there are no definitive medical procedures that can clear PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from the body, according to the Secretary of the United States Navy. However, the best step you can take is to remove the source of the exposure from your environment.
PFAS have been found in a wide array of consumer and institutional products, including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant carpet and furniture, waterproof clothing, compostable food service ware, firefighting foam, refrigerants, artificial turf, building materials, and more.
For the 25 TDS samples where we detected at least one type PFAS, 20 of the samples were seafood, representing 53% (20 out of 38) of the TDS seafood samples. For our 2022 targeted seafood survey, we detected PFAS in 74% (60 out of 81) of the samples of clams, cod, crab, pollock, salmon, shrimp, tilapia, and tuna.
Some PFAS have been linked to some health problems in humans including higher cholesterol, lower birth weights, lower immune response to vaccines, kidney and testicular cancer, high blood pressure in pregnancy, and changes in liver function. Many medical devices, including implanted devices, orthopedic components, surgical devices, contact lenses, surgical gloves, catheters, tubing, and blood bags are made of PFAS. For example, a commonly used PFAS in medical devices is Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
So far, four states have passed laws banning certain chemicals from cosmetics: California, Maryland, New York, and Washington. Washington is the most recent to have passed such a law, having done so on April 14, 2023.
Colorado lawmakers in 2022 passed a bipartisan bill that banned the sale of carpets, fabric treatments and food packing that contained PFAS, along with other restrictions.
AB 2771 restricts PFAS in cosmetic products. California now joins Colorado in becoming the second state to pass a state law that explicitly bans the entire class of PFAS in cosmetics.
Other companies are getting rid of the chemicals too. Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons, said it would ban PFAS in food packaging globally by 2025. Outdoor gear retailer Patagonia has pledged to eliminate PFAS across its entire product line by 2025 .
